[June 23, 2020] JoCo Cruise Community Nickname

JoCo Cruise Community Nickname

After our 2020 cruise, we solicited feedback from the JoCo Cruise community regarding JoCo Cruise’s “Sea Monkey” nickname, in light of the troubling history of “monkey” as a racial slur. We thank the hundreds of community members who shared their feedback.

Based on this feedback and internal discussions, the JoCo Cruise Management has decided to no longer use “Sea Monkey” and other monkey-themed nicknames when referring to JoCo Cruise community members going forward. Regardless of their origin or intent, these names hold hurtful racially-charged connotations for many in our community. After considering all the feedback and consulting with a diverse range of people, we’ve concluded that to ignore this issue would prevent JoCo Cruise from being a safe and welcoming space for all attendees.

We’ve already begun work to remove this language from our website and future official materials, and appreciate your patience as this process continues.

We don’t have a new “official” nickname for JoCo Cruisers—in fact, we’re not certain it’s our place to assign one, nor to “bless” one of the several that have been in circulation since we began addressing this issue.

JoCo Cruise has changed and evolved in many ways over the years—including the very name of the event—and it will continue to do so. One thing that has remained consistent throughout is the thoughtfulness and enthusiasm of the JoCo Cruise community. Thank you for contributing to this spirit year after year.

Jonathan, Paul, Storm and Drew (The Management)

The above statement can also be found on our website; if there are any further updates regarding this issue, they will be posted on that page.

A Question for the Community

There was discussion raised at this year’s Management Q&A, as well as in some folks’ post-cruise survey comments, regarding the event’s monkey-themed onboard imagery and decor and the “Sea Monkey” nickname, given the troubling history of “monkey” as a racial slur.

If any of you have thoughts on the matter that you wish to share with the Management (beyond any comments you may have already made in the survey), please feel free to email feedback@jococruise.com. All emails will be kept private and confidential.

Thanks as always,

THO.

[April 9, 2020] #CruiseInPlace; Also: 2020 COVID-19 Future Cruise Credit Program

#CruiseInPlace

We know people are looking for ways to feel connected while we collectively “ride out” this situation. We'll be using the hashtag #CruiseInPlace on our various social media accounts to note JoCo Cruise-related events, performances, fundraising efforts, etc.—particularly (though not exclusively) fundraisers and events in reaction to the pandemic. Keep an eye out for them if you're looking for hangouts, things to do, ways to help, and so forth.

Here's just a few current examples:

  • Vance Gilbert has been holding an ongoing “Vance Gilbert’s Monday Night Acoustic Pajama Party” series, with a portion of proceeds from each event going to help various charities. Check Vance's Twitter feed for info. https://twitter.com/vancegilbert
  • Charlie Jane Anders has been working with SF Bay-area book lovers to hold a series of online readings and conversations to collect funds for area local bookstores - https://welovebookstores.org/.
  • The Thrilling Adventure Hour—created by 2014 alums Ben Acker and Ben Blacker, and featuring JoCo Cruise alums Janet Varney, Hal Lublin, Mark Gagliardi, Paul F. Tompkins and Craig Cackowski—is doing a live streaming show this coming Saturday (April 11) to benefit food banks in LA, NY, Seattle, Detroit, NOLA, & more. Tix: http://bit.ly/TAHLive411.
  • Jim Boggia has a Facebook Live streaming concert this coming Sunday (Apr. 12). https://www.facebook.com/events/2842572609193300/
  • Comedian Maria Bamford has an ongoing series of “New Material” shows, helping to raise funds for L.A.'s Downtown Women's Center. See her Twitter feed for details. https://twitter.com/mariabamfoo
  • The Doubleclicks have an ongoing series of streaming concerts and gaming sessions, including appearances by Molly Lewis and other JoCo Cruise alums. https://www.thedoubleclicks.com/
  • John Hodgman hosts a daily event, “Get Your Pets”, on his Instagram feed, chatting with pets and their owners. https://www.instagram.com/johnhodgman/

This is by no means a comprehensive list; keep an eye on the JoCo Cruise social media accounts for additional #CruiseInPlace mentions—or feel free to post your own!

JoCo Cruise 2020 COVID-19 Future Cruise Credit Program

The Home Office has announced our JoCo Cruise 2020 COVID-19 Future Cruise Credit (JCCCFCC) program, intended to provide an opportunity for those individuals who were not able to sail aboard JoCo Cruise 2020 due to the exceptional COVID-19 pandemic circumstances to sail with JoCo Cruise in either 2021 or 2022. It is created, managed, and paid for by JoCo Cruise, and is not connected with Holland America Line’s or any other company’s initiatives.
https://jococruise.com/jcccfcc/

Complete JCCCFCC details can be found at the above link. We have directly emailed all JoCo Cruise 2020 passengers we believe to be eligible for this program; if you believe you are eligible and have not seen our email, please check your email spam folder for items from future-cruise-credit@jococruise.com. If you have definitely not received an email and believe you are eligible for JCCCFCC, please contact future-cruise-credit@jococruise.com immediately.

Eligibility for JCCCFCC is dependent upon submission and JoCo Cruise approval of the JCCCFCC qualification form (which has been emailed to those who we believe may be eligible). The JCCCFCC qualification form must be completely filled out and submitted no later than May 3, 2020.

[March 26, 2020] Post-cruise Survey Reminder

Post-cruise Survey Reminder

As the subject line and the above header indicate, this is a quick reminder to please fill out our JoCo Cruise 2020 Post-cruise Survey when you get a chance. (And a hearty Thank You to the many who have already done so.) Link is below:

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JCC2020survey

It's not brief—most people take around 20-30 minutes, depending on how many things you participated in, and how detailed you wish to make any comments—but you don't necessarily have to fill it out in a single session (if you accept cookies from surveymonkey.com). The results of these post-cruise surveys are the most important, thorough feedback we get each year, and they have a strong influence on many programming and operational decisions we make for future cruises.

We know things are kinda crazy for everyone these days (us included), but your participation will help us get as complete and statistically-accurate feedback and data as possible. PLUS…it's a way better distraction than Zoom calls with your cousins or doing sudoku. (Though, we admit, probably not as great a distraction as the new Animal Crossing. Gotta get more bells!) And your thoughtful and honest responses will help us continue to improve as we look toward 2021 and beyond.

Thanks as always,

THO.

[March 19, 2020] Special Updates Regarding 2020 and 2021

Special Updates Regarding 2020 and 2021

We at the Home Office haven't stopped playing “catch-up” since disembarking this past weekend. Busy as it's been, we're sensitive to the fact that many people have questions regarding our 2020 and 2021 cruises.

In the interest of creating a central source for answers to some of the more common questions we've received, and to highlight some important new information, we've created our Special Updates Regarding 2020 and 2021 web page.
https://jococruise.com/updates/

It includes our most current information regarding the following topics:

We'll update this when there are changes to share. We thank you, as always, for your continued patience and understanding as we all roll with this unprecedented and evolving world situation.

Thank you all,

THO.

[March 16, 2020] JoCo Cruise 2020: Thanks, Post-cruise Survey and Wrap-up

ThankYouThankYouThankYou!!!

We'd like to once again thank all of you who joined us this year. Despite the uncertainty in the weeks before boarding, the threat of rain in Santo Domingo, the last-minute port of call changes, and the rough-as-we've-ever-experienced first night choppy seas, you stayed flexible, enthusiastic and cheery in the face of it all and helped to make this—dare we say it?—our best JoCo Cruise to date. Your collective spirit and joy are what define JoCo Cruise every year, and 2020 was absolutely no exception.

We hope everyone's travel home was uneventful. Here at the many locations of THO, we’re continuing to wash our hands with great frequency and conducting regular toilet paper inventories, even as we wrap up 2020 and start 2021 planning (it’s gonna be great!) So if you’ve emailed us, thank you for your patience in getting back to you.

Post-cruise Survey

We ask that you please take the time to fill out our post-cruise feedback survey. Besides the cruise itself, it's the most important thing we do each year, because it's through your collective thoughts on the event that can we effectively work to improve it.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JCC2020survey

We know that this survey isn't “quick & easy.” But every section is important, and we greatly appreciate your taking the time to fill it out. If necessary, you also don't have to complete it in one sitting; if you accept cookies from surveymonkey.com, returning to the above link should take you directly to the page following your last completed page.

Because we'd like our results to be as complete as possible, please be sure to share this survey URL with everyone in your booking, whether or not they have a JoCo Cruise User Account. Also feel free to share it with friends who weren't on JoCo Cruise 2020; there are sections relevant to them as well.

Health Concerns and Practices Post-Cruise

We absolutely share everyone’s concerns about what will happen with COVID-19. Regarding JoCo Cruise 2020, in addition to applauding the ship’s efforts, we want to commend everyone for maintaining a high standard of hygiene. All medical instances were of the customary variety, and to our knowledge there were no confirmed cases of COVID-19 aboard JoCo Cruise 2020.

Now that we’re on land, like everyone else we’re doing our best to listen to the most credible voices and filter out misinformation, and we believe the best current course is to follow the recommendations of the CDC and your local and state government officials, including continuing to practice preventative hygiene measures, social distancing, and if/when you deem necessary, self-isolation.

All of which make staying in touch with your fellow members of the JoCo Cruise community more beneficial than ever. Our knowing that the goodwill and kindness engendered on JoCo Cruise lives year-round in thousands of places, and thousands more online, helps drive us to make each year’s event the best one ever.

At this time, we don't plan to send any further health updates unless there is a material change and/or update from HAL we need to share with you all.

2021 Onboard Booking

If you completed an Onboard Booking Form for JoCo Cruise 2021 while sailing on JoCo Cruise 2020, you should have just today received a confirmation email regarding your booking. This is a friendly reminder that payments for your 2021 booking must be received by March 24th. If you completed a form and did not receive confirmation, or if you have any questions regarding your 2021 booking, please contact booking@jococruise.com ASAP. Again, we appreciate your patience if we don't reply to you immediately; we promise we will get back to you in as timely a matter as possible.

One More Cartoon from Emily Flake

Our guest Emily Flake submitted a cartoon that we didn't have time to include in the onboard When & Where newsletter, but was too good to not release, so here it is:

[March 6, 2020] HAL's Latest Policy Change; Performer Update

HAL's Latest Policy Update

This afternoon (Friday, March 6th), Holland America Line announced a policy change for their retail guests, offering Future Cruise Credits on a later Holland America Line sailing to passengers who wish to cancel their existing bookings. As their statement notes, this policy does not apply to charters (such as JoCo Cruise). We were not notified of this policy change before it was announced this afternoon.
https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/news/2020-press-releases/news-03062020-BookWithConfidence.html
PDF

Since then, we have been working with our contacts at Holland America Line to determine if and how their retail policy might be applied to JoCo Cruise. Unfortunately, we do not expect to have definitive answers before JoCo Cruise 2020 sails, and possibly not until after we have returned. We know that this may affect some people's travel decisions, but this is all the information we have at this time. Thank you for your continued patience and awesomeness as we work through these extraordinary circumstances.

Performer Update

  • Yoon Ha Lee will be unable to join us this year and sends their regrets.
  • Liz Phair will be performing in our Santo Domingo Land Concert, but will not be sailing on JoCo Cruise.

All our other performers are here with us in Fort Lauderdale (besides one whose flight is tomorrow morning) and are ready to cruise.

We will continue to work in the best interests of our guests both now and after JoCo Cruise 2020. Once more, we encourage everyone to exercise best judgement when traveling if you are sick. We look forward to seeing you all tomorrow morning.

THO.

[March 6, 2020] Almost Boat! Plus, Performer Update

Almost Boat!

Boat's comin', y'all, TOOT TOOT! We are extremely excited to see all of you tomorrow. (And possibly randomly run across some of you in Fort Lauderdale today and tonight.) We thank you all for being so awesome during this, shall we say, unorthodox couple of weeks.

We've pointed you to it a lot lately, but we'll just mention one more time that HAL's COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Travel Advisory page has complete information regarding their current health advisory and travel safety procedures. They've also recently posted a video by their Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Grant Tarling, that outlines some very helpful information on how to stay healthy while traveling.
https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/news/coronavirus-travel-advisory.html

If you are feeling sick, please be sure to exercise your best judgement before coming to the cruise port, and be aware of HAL's policy regarding accurately completing your health screening forms during check-in. We look forward to a happy, healthy and awesome cruise for everyone.

Performer Update

We are bummed to make the following announcement:

  • ZoĂ« Keating has a fever today, so in the interest of her and her family's health and well being as well as that of all our passengers, she will not be joining us for JoCo Cruise 2020. She says she's very sorry (which is to be expected, as she's Canadian) and sends her deepest regrets and will miss you all.
  • Wil Wheaton will also be unable to join us this year. Here's a statement Wil asked us to pass along to all of you:

I've gone on every JoCo cruise since 2010. It breaks my heart to miss this significant anniversary, but I don't have a choice. Because a nonzero number of y'all reading this will be disappointed upon receiving this news, I just wanted to take a moment and explain.

In about three weeks, I will start a job that has the potential to change my career, and my life. I'm not paranoid, I'm not panicking, but I'm considering my future, my family's future, and doing my best to make choices that are in their best interests.

After extensive consultation with my team of agents and managers, lots of conversations with Anne, and many late nights alone with my thoughts, I concluded that even a 1% chance of being disrupted by a quarantine, or picking something up in an airport, was too much of a risk. If I ended up sick or quarantined, this show would be forced to recast, I would lose the job, and I would be devastated. As much as I love this cruise and the world we all get to live in when we are on The Boat, I have to prioritize the world I live in now, and the world I believe this job is going to open up for me.

Sea Monkeys are awesome, so I know you'll get this: I have a chance to live my dream. *MY* dream, not someone else's dream that I felt obligated to live for most of my life. I know that there is not a person among you who would even consider for a moment putting anything in between me and realizing that dream.

I'm going to miss you all. I'm going to miss everything about The Boat, and I'm going to miss seeing the wonderful people I only get to see once a year.

But my dreams are finally coming true, and I have to do everything I can to ensure I am in the best position to realize them.

I know some of y'all are disappointed. I am right there with you, and it's why we waited until the last possible minute to make this decision. We just kept hoping something would change, that there was some way to justify this tiny risk, and I just couldn't do it. But I know you all understand, and I appreciate that so much.

Have a wonderful voyage, everyone. I will miss you all, and I'll see you next time.

Wil

[puts on our Jean Valjean vest] Onnnnnne daaaaaaay mooooooooooooooooore!

[March 5, 2020] Read HAL's Latest Update; Some Final Announcements and Reminders

Hello again Sea Monkeys! It’s almost CRUISE O’ CLOCK!

Holland America Line’s Latest Update

You should have received an email update directly from Holland America Line this morning regarding updates to their existing travel advisories and policies. If you are checked in for your cruise in HAL's website and did not receive this email, please check your spam folder. You can also find Holland America Line’s COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Travel Advisory on their website.
https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/news/coronavirus-travel-advisory.html

Regarding the “compensation review process” referenced in their email update: as of the time of this writing, you may be eligible to participate in the Holland America Line compensation review process in the following situations only:

  • You have traveled on an itinerary that is restricted from sailing by Holland America Line’s COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Travel Advisory and have satisfactory proof of said travel.
  • You are denied boarding at the terminal by Holland America Line due to COVID-19-related health concerns.

In all other cases, JoCo Cruise’s cancellation policy remains in full effect.
https://jococruise.com/faq/#what-is-your-cancellation-policy

For complete information and instructions how to begin the compensation review process in the case of either situation above, please visit our JoCo Cruise 2020 and Holland America Line’s COVID-19 Compensation Review Process FAQ.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rpw7bcq0ByqjrlVoAN8TAJSZuv9WQRwL/edit

John Hodgman

In somewhat related news: performer and JoCo Cruise favorite John Hodgman recently traveled to Venice, Italy, which has now been added to Holland America Line’s travel-restricted locations. As such, he will not be allowed to board the Nieuw Amsterdam, and will be unable to join us for JoCo Cruise 2020. He expresses his deep regret at having to miss the cruise this year, and wishes all Sea Monkeys the bon-est of voyages.

Contacting the Home Office

Over the next few days, everyone from The Home Office will be burning the metaphorical midnight oil in preparation for our boarding and launch. Be aware that we will not be able to respond to emails and voicemails in a timely manner.

NOTE: THO does not have any further information regarding HAL's policies and procedures beyond what we have sent in our emails and what is publicly posted on HAL's website. Requests for further explanation or interpretation of these policies will only get pointed back to those same sources.

A Few Final Day 1 Reminders

Per last week's email, after you check in with Holland America you'll be scooting on over to pick up your badge and lanyard from our helpful JoCo Cruise gang of helpers. To help hasten the process along, please try to remember which team you're on—as a reminder, you and the people in your boarding are assigned to Red Team (Early Dinner/Late Concert). (If you are in Club SRO, please note that fact when picking up your badge and lanyard; they'll confirm you on the Club SRO list and then give you your specially-colored Club SRO lanyard in lieu of a red/gold one.) The “bullet points” version of some (though not all!) main events happening on Day 1 to kick your week off right:

Day 1 is “Welcome, New Monkeys!” day. All experienced Sea Monkeys, please try to make a particular effort to make our new friends feel at home at our “nerd summer camp.”

List of Prohibited Items

HAL has asked us to specifically remind everyone of their list of prohibited items from their FAQ. It's a lengthy and important list, and it's occasionally amusing to read. It includes the phrase “knuckle-dusters!” Don't bring hookahs or canoes! Also, one might think they put catapults on the list solely with our cruise in mind.
https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/faq.safety-and-security.prohibited-items.html

What If I Miss the Ship?

Please see our “Help! I missed (or am going to miss) the ship! What do I do now?” FAQ item for complete information on what steps to take if you have missed, or fear you are going to miss, boarding in Fort Lauderdale.
https://jococruise.com/faq/#help-i-missed-or-am-going-to-miss

[March 3, 2020] COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Travel Advisory

At the time of publication, HAL had not yet sent this via email. Posting this for informational purposes, from https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/news/coronavirus-travel-advisory.html:

COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Travel Advisory

Seattle, Wash., Mar. 03, 2020 (7:43 PM PST)

Health Advisory and Travel Safety Procedures

To protect the health and safety of all onboard, we are closely monitoring the evolving situation with respect to COVID-19. Our medical experts are coordinating closely with international health authorities and together, we have developed enhanced screening, prevention and control procedures for our ships to keep guests and crew safe.

These measures include:

  1. Any individual who has traveled from or through mainland China, Macau, Hong Kong, South Korea, Iran or lockdown areas within Lombardy and Veneto, Italy within 14 days of the start of their cruise (including transit through their airports) will not be permitted to board the ship.
    1. Shipboard staff will be scanning guest passports to verify transit through any of the prohibited areas. Given the serious nature of these circumstances, false responses on pre-boarding documents will result in immediate disembarkation at the next opportunity. Guests who do not disclose travel through prohibited areas may also face additional legal consequences.
  2. Any individual who has been in contact with a suspected or confirmed case of COVID-19, or a person under monitoring for COVID-19 within 14 days of the start of the cruise, will not be permitted to board the ship.
  3. Enhanced pre-boarding screening of all guests and crew, including temperature checks, who have visited any area with apparent community spread and for individuals reporting illness.
  4. Standard pre-boarding health reporting for all guests advising them of their obligation to report any illness symptoms.
  5. Medical screening for COVID-19 on all individuals who visit our onboard Medical Center with symptoms of respiratory illness.
  6. Reporting to local health authorities of all cases of fever and respiratory illness, and any patients with suspected COVID-19 infection.
  7. Crew members from China, South Korea or lockdown areas within Lombardy and Veneto, Italy will be delayed from joining any ship until further notice.
  8. Enhanced environmental sanitation onboard with a disinfectant that kills coronaviruses within 30 seconds.

As with all respiratory illnesses, particularly during cold and flu season, you can take steps to reduce your risk of illness:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds.
  • Supplement hand washing by using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer
  • Avoid close contact with people suffering from respiratory illness.
  • Cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze using a tissue or your bent elbow.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Get vaccinated against seasonal influenza.

Updated information on the illness and travel advice, can be found at the CDC website. https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/

Please be aware that as the situation is changing rapidly, you may be required to undergo additional health screening measures by local health officials before you disembark at any of the ports we visit, and entry requirements are subject to change. If any revisions need to be made to our itinerary due to travel restrictions, or to protect the health and safety of our guests and crew, we will update you as soon as possible.

The above is subject to change at any time based on the interests of health and safety of our guests and crew and any other requirements that may be imposed by local authorities.
*14-days is the accepted standard incubation period of COVID-19 recognized by the WHO and US CDC.

Guest Travel Guidelines

Our team recommends the following routine best practices for travel:

  • Purchase travel insurance — It’s always a good idea to purchase Holland America Line’s Cancellation Protection Plan or Platinum Plan which allows you to cancel for any reason, or some other form of travel protection, not only to protect you from any losses stemming from unforeseeable circumstances during your vacation, but to give you confidence to make new plans. This should extend to airfare bookings as well. Make sure you fully understand any policy you purchase to understand what is and isn’t covered.
  • Provide Emergency Contacts — While our intention is to deliver a quality travel experience, in rare circumstances it may be necessary to reach an emergency contact on your behalf. Provide a validated emergency contact & phone number within your booking. The emergency contact should not be traveling with you, but another personal connection.
  • Mobile phone instructions — Remember to enable an international travel plan inclusive of voice and data. Cell phone networks vary by country and Wi-Fi is not as available in some destinations. An international plan will enable you to stay connected at a reasonable rate and ensure you can be contacted.
  • Pack extra medication — Guests are always encouraged to travel with at least two weeks of extra medication beyond the length of the cruise, when possible, in the event of unexpected travel delays and emergencies. Also bring a list of the names, strengths and dosages of all medications in case refills are required.
  • Practice healthy travel habits always — According to the World Health Organization and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, the simplest and most effective way to prevent illness, is to take extra care to practice basic health habits, including:
    • Washing your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds
    • Taking advantage of hand sanitizer wherever it’s available
    • Covering your nose and mouth when coughing or sneezing using a tissue or your bent elbow. And always dispose of the used tissue and wash your hands afterwards
    • Avoiding touching your eyes, nose and mouth with your hands
    • Avoiding close contact with sick people

Be aware of latest health advisories and new travel restrictions as they may change with little notice.

Last update 7:43 PM PST 03-03-2020

[March 2, 2020] Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Update - Mar. 2

In the interest of our guests receiving the most timely and accurate information possible, we are handing off further email updates regarding 2019-nCoV and our March 7th sailing to Holland America Line. Any further updates will be sent to you directly via Holland America Line.

Because these emails will be sent through Holland America’s IT system, the only way to receive these updates is to be checked in online for your cruise via the HAL website. If you are not already checked in, you can find instructions here.
https://jococruise.com/faq/#how-do-i-check-in-online-for-my-cruise

Please note that Holland America communications usually deal with retail cruise guests and not full ship charters like ours. Their updates will likely include a notice about financial terms should Holland America decide at the terminal that a passenger cannot sail. The specifics regarding how any HAL retail policies will be applied for JoCo Cruise 2020 passengers are TBD, and in the event any JoCo Cruise passengers are denied boarding due to 2019-nCoV determinations, we will work with Holland America to resolve those cases after JoCo Cruise 2020 returns.

We must also note that the above health determinations will be made at the sole discretion of Holland America Line, and will ONLY be reached at the terminal, on the day of our sailing. Holland America has protocols in the works for temperature checks and heightened screening for those potentially exposed via community transmission (as opposed to travel), but there is not yet a timeline for rollout.

Finally, the “What We Are Doing To Protect the Health of Our Guests” section of this Holland America page provides a complete rundown of their current measures, which they will update as necessary.
https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/news/coronavirus-travel-advisory.html

Thanks for your continued attention to these important updates, and we look forward to seeing you in Fort Lauderdale, and on JoCo Cruise 2020.

THO.

[February 28, 2020] Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Update - Feb. 28

We have a brief update regarding Holland America Line's travel restrictions; Korea has been added to the list of countries subject to travel restrictions. Current HAL policy is now as follows:

Anyone who has traveled from or through mainland China, Macau, Hong Kong or Korea (including airport transits), or has had contact with a suspected or confirmed case of coronavirus (2019-nCoV) within 14 days of the start of this cruise [after February 21] will not be allowed to board the ship.

If this applies to you, please contact us and we will put you in touch with Holland America.

Please also be aware of the following precautions being taken by Holland America, and supported by JoCo Cruise:

All guests will be subject to pre-boarding health reporting and enhanced screening at check-in. Due to changing circumstances, it is possible that authorities in the countries on our cruise may change their entry requirements on short notice.

Guest passports will be scanned to verify compliance. False responses on forms will result in denial of boarding and/or immediate disembarkation at the next opportunity, and you may face legal consequences. We may change requirements to safeguard guests and crew.

Once again, we thank Holland America Line for their ongoing efforts in addressing this situation, and look forward to a safe and healthy JoCo Cruise. If we receive new information, we will provide an update as soon as possible.

THO

[February 27, 2020] Boarding Process and Day 1 Info; Board Game Exchange Events

SOON™ is now EXTREMELY SOON™! So we wanted to give you a basic walkthrough of the boarding process and important Day 1 events.

Also, tabletop gamers: don't overlook the info further down about this year's Board/Card Game Exchange events.

Don't Be Late

However you are getting to Port Everglades on Saturday, Mar. 7th—taxi, hotel shuttle, transporter—HAL requires all passengers to be on board 90 minutes before departure, which means by 3:30 pm. “On board” means “checked in and physically on the ship,” so make sure you leave adequate time. And they’re very serious about this kind of thing. Don’t dawdle.
https://www.porteverglades.net/

Boarding Documents and Passports

Make sure you have your passports (or other approved travel identification https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/faq/know-before-you-go.html) for boarding. You should also print out and bring your HAL Boarding Passes, assuming you've checked in online (https://book2.hollandamerica.com/olci-iu/#/findBooking) like we've mentioned repeatedly. Online check-in must be completed no fewer than 72 hours before departure. If you forget your Boarding Passes or don't check-in online, you won't get refused entry; you'll just have to fill out the paperwork manually at the cruiseport.

When Can I Board?

General check-in and boarding on Saturday begins approximately 11:30 am and ends at 3:30 pm. (Guests arriving before the terminal is open will need to stay in the waiting area outside the terminal.) Cruiseport staff will be on hand outside and inside to help you find where you need to go. But the process is pretty self-explanatory: you'll drop your luggage off with the baggage handlers out front (if you haven't preprinted your luggage tags, they will have tags available), you'll go through the port's security screening, and then proceed to HAL's check-in desks.

NOTE: HAL should have provided you with “embarkation times” (i.e., boarding times) during your online check-in process. This is to help ensure that everyone doesn't all arrive at once, to avoid “San Diego Comic Con Hall H”-level lines and wait times. That said, if you are new to JoCo Cruise and your listed embarkation time would have you miss most/all of the Orientation (see below), you may check-in earlier than your “assigned” time. (We ask that only New Monkeys do this, please; see previous note re: soul-crushing lines and wait times.)

Checking In and Getting Your Stuff

When you check in at the terminal, you'll receive your ship ID card (you'll use as your room key, for getting off and on the ship at ports of call, and for all onboard purchases), as well as some nifty handouts (including the JoCo Cruise Handbook, a.k.a. “the blue book”). Immediately following your HAL check-in, there'll be a secondary set of tables where you'll get your badges and your Red Team/Gold Team/Club SRO lanyards, as well as badge pronoun stickers and “Friendshipping” social interaction buttons (see below) for all who wish them. If boarding hasn't begun yet, you'll wait around in the terminal's large waiting area. (Because that's what it's there for!) Once general boarding commences, in the long hallway leading to the gangway, there'll be tables with Sharpies for adding your name to your badge (and if you like, an “Ask Me About” topic).

NOTE: when you originally booked JoCo Cruise 2020, the primary contact agreed to the JoCo Cruise 2020 Terms and Conditions on your booking's behalf. During the HAL check-in at the pier, all adults will need to sign the Terms and Conditions for themselves and on behalf of any minors under their responsibility. Every passenger MUST sign the Terms and Conditions (or have it signed on their behalf where applicable) in order to board JoCo Cruise.

Pre-purchased merch (where applicable) and swag will be delivered directly to your staterooms on Day 1. How convenient!

Once Aboard

Your stateroom may not be ready immediately upon boarding; it takes a while to completely turn over an entire floating hotel's worth of rooms. If not, there's plenty of options for biding your time. The Lido Marketplace will be open, as will several of the ship's bars. Feel free to explore, familiarize yourself with the ship's layout, check out the various drink and spa packages available, and generally chill.

Orientation

The Management will hold an Orientation session from 3 - 4 pm in the Mainstage theater (Deck 2, forward). We'll give a brief overview of basic JoCo Cruise logistics at the start, then we'll take any general questions you may have. You can show up when you can/wish, and leave when you wish. It's not mandatory, but it's recommended for new Sea Monkeys, and is open to all passengers.

Safety Drill

At 4 pm everyone must participate in the ship's mandatory safety drill. We want to set the HAL record for efficiency on this drill, so please be on time—or early!—to your appointed muster station (indicated on your keycard; ship's staff can help direct you). There will be announcements via the ship's loudspeaker providing complete instructions.

“Once More unto the Breach, Dear Friends” Sail Away Reception

At 4:30 pm, to celebrate how well the safety drill went (and also to watch the ship pull out of port), everyone is welcome to gather on the Lido and Observation Decks (Decks 9 and 10) and officially bid Regular Life “adieu” for the week and usher in Sea Monkey Life. Free sparkling wine, mimosas and Bloody Marys!

Friendshipping Buttons

We've teamed up once again with our friends Jenn and Trin from the Friendshipping podcast to create Friendshipping buttons to indicate your social mood. You'll receive them during check-in; wear them as it suits you to indicate whether you are actively seeking social interactions currently, or prefer not to be approached. Please be sure to take cues from the Friendshipping buttons others might be wearing; if someone is wearing their “NO” button, please don't approach them even if they're currently interacting with others; rather, allow them to initiate any new interactions.

Board Game Exchange!

Sign up to host a game during the Board/Card Game Exchange, and the tabletop team will find your players! Complex euros, the classics, the weirds—all are welcome! We have two Board/Card Game Exchange events on the schedule (on Mon. 3/9 and Wed. 3/11), and each event runs for two hours, providing you with time to play longer games. Follow this link for more information, and to sign up to host a game; the form will remain available until we've run out of available tables, so act fast! Players will be able to sign up for the games when the Game Library opens on board!

[February 26, 2020] Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Update

We continue to receive daily updates from Holland America Line and our wider cruise industry contacts about the developing coronavirus situation. Per Holland America, travel restrictions have expanded slightly since our update last week:

Anyone who has traveled from or through mainland China, Macau or Hong Kong (including airport transits), or has had contact with a suspected or confirmed case of coronavirus (2019-nCoV) within 14 days of the start of this cruise [after February 21] will not be allowed to board the ship.

We thank Holland America Line for their ongoing efforts in addressing this situation, and look forward to a safe and healthy JoCo Cruise. If we receive new information, we will provide an update as soon as possible.

[February 25, 2020] The JoCo Cruise 2020 Schedule!

2020 Schedule

The JoCo Cruise 2020 online schedule is now available, all shout hurrah!

https://jococruise2020.sched.com

The schedule is subject to change, although at this point we expect no “large scale” changes or surprises. There will be a few more additions over the coming week—mostly, some additional performer/guest “Office Hours” sessions.

While on board, updated versions of the schedule can be found:

  • on the Sched page online (you DO NOT need to purchase onboard Internet access to view the Sched page; just connect to the ship's network)
  • in the daily newsletter
  • on printed and digital schedules posted throughout the ship
  • via the on-demand menu of your in-stateroom TV
  • deep inside your heart (it was there all along!)

We won't be handing out a printed version of the schedule to all attendees this year—trying to save a few trees—but if anyone would like a physical printout of the schedule while on board, you can get one via the JoCo Cruise Info Desk on Deck 1 in the Atrium.

Workshop Signups

Please note that several of the workshops being run by our performers/guests this year will have limited capacity. (Any capacity limits are noted in the event description.) People wishing to attend any of these workshops must apply via our Workshop Attendance Signup Form. (The link to this form can also be found in the description of each applicable workshop.) Applications will be accepted until March 1st, at which time applicants will be notified whether or not they have been selected to attend your chosen workshop(s). For any workshop with more submissions than there are slots available, attendees will be selected randomly from all submitted entries.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd_YORvaJuX6MD_z32sOy9bir1SVXFnxMDKvXG7G3LCeZQqgg/viewform

  • One entry per person, please. Duplicate entries for any given workshop will be discarded, and will not increase your chances of being selected.
  • If you wish to attend a workshop that does not have capped attendance, YOU DO NOT NEED TO FILL OUT THIS FORM. But note that attendance may still be subject to venue capacity.
  • If you are not selected, you may still choose to wait in the “standby line” outside your chosen workshop's venue prior to its start time; in the event of no-shows and/or additional slots being made available, these will be allotted to “standby” persons on a first-come, first-served basis.

PLEASE NOTE: if you are selected, but arrive late to your chosen workshop, your position may be given away to anyone waiting in the “standby line.”

Minors and Shadow Cruise & Crafting Events

For all Shadow Cruise events and Crafting Room events, unless an event's description states otherwise, it is requested that all attendees of aged 12 and under be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Enforcement of this recommended guideline shall be at the discretion of the person(s) running each given event. While we welcome and encourage the participation of our 12-and-under Sea Monkeys, our onboard events need to be adequately staffed and sufficiently able to manage the needs of all their attendees.

One Final Note Re: Shadow Cruise

This year, we have over 250 hours of Shadow Cruise programming—50+ hours more than last year! So first off, many thanks are due to Shadow Master Bob (aka rhaje) for his Herculean efforts to find places and times for everything, which was no mean feat.

Given the volume of the Shadow Cruise this year, we will be unable to add new Shadow Cruise events to the schedule while onboard, the way we have in previous years. If you wish to schedule any new events while onboard, we recommend organizing them via Twit-arr and/or the easel pads in the Explorer's Lounge (Deck 2, Aft), and we recommend you hold them in the larger public spaces with ample available seating (Lido Market, Sea View Pool area, etc.). Please make sure that any onboard events you organize don't conflict with any existing Official or Shadow Cruise events in your chosen location. (In the event of such a conflict, existing scheduled events will be given priority.)

[February 20, 2020] Land Concert Info; RPG Game Exchange Event; An Invitation from Drew; Sponsor Shout-outs

Santo Domingo Land Concert

Our annual Land Concert is one of the most fun—and certainly one of the biggest—events we throw each year. This year, it will be held in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

Want some info about it? Because here's some info about it!

The concert will take place in the Plaza de España, which is just a brief walk from the cruise terminal—and it’s large enough for everyone to hang out in historic fashion. The map above indicates (in somewhat cartoony but relatively clear fashion) the basic path from the ship to the Plaza, as well as the general event layout.

The Plaza will be closed off in the morning and early afternoon for setup and sound checks. “Doors” will open at 4 pm, and performances will run from 5 pm to approximately 11 pm. Also, we'll be taking the official Group Photo just before the concert begins, so make sure you're around for that.

Important notes:

  • Your JoCo Cruise 2020 badge & lanyard will serve as your access pass into the concert area. Please be sure to bring them.
  • The walk from the cruiseport door to the plaza entrance is, depending on your walking speed, approximately 8-10 minutes. (For any 2019 Sea Monkeys, It's roughly as far as the walk to the San Juan Land Concert, perhaps a little less.)
    • While the walkway is mostly flat, there are some stairs, inclines and cobblestones as you approach the main entrance of the Plaza. There will be ramps and curb cuts along along the way, but please note that this historical area was not built with accessibility in mind, and may present challenges.
    • Transportation will be provided between the cruiseport and the Plaza for those with mobility issues from 3:45 pm until 12 midnight. (Plaza pick-up and drop-off will be at the “Museum” end of the Plaza per the picture above; passengers will not have to navigate any stairs for arrival/departure.)
  • This will be a “stand-up/sit-down” music festival—as with our previous Land Concerts, the area by the stage will be for standing, but there will be plenty of seating further back. There will be several sections reserved for accessible seating (one near the stage, one further back); they do not require any pre-approval or other process.
  • We’ve arranged to have food trucks with local cuisine available for purchase on-site, starting at 4 pm. Bars will also be set up in the Plaza so you won’t need to choose between seeing the concert and enjoying a tasty beverage. The food and beverages in the plaza will be sold via tickets, which will be available for purchase on site via $US cash, Visa or Mastercard.
  • There are also numerous bars and restaurants along the plaza and in the nearby neighborhood. Most Santo Domingo restaurants, bars and stores accept credit cards and $US cash, but change will likely be given in Dominican pesos.
  • IN THE EVENT OF INCLEMENT WEATHER, we will notify all passengers as to any schedule and/or location changes for the Land Concert via our newsletter and/or shipboard announcements. (And YES, we have a rain contingency for 2020, heh heh *crying emoji*)
  • While it WILL NOT RAIN THAT DAY, this being the Caribbean, you should prepare for the occasional rain shower in any of our ports of call, so pack and dress accordingly.

It's gonna look exactly like this, except with a stage and lights and musicians performing and food and drinks and a bunch of happy Sea Monkeys and stuff.

RPG Game Exchange Event

A message from Jenn Ellis and our awesome Tabletop Team…

This year we're doing our “large RPG event” in two different time slots (yay for early birds!), as well using as a variety of different RPGs in addition to D&D. We're calling this our RPG Game Exchange. First off: we need people to sign up to host a game. You can run any RPG, but to make your life easy we've selected five different RPGs with a variety of themes and complexity, for which we'll provide all the materials available for you and your players to run. Many require no advance prep at all.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1cI9nLc5kHYrgLfUTIeo2DDpYgRmMPyOD/view

If you're interested in hosting an RPG for this event, sign up to host here. Player signups will take place on board.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeH4v8_Lnn8XYHIUYzXfZJSnp6yYakmqzzHLeZ6U7-BvfzHBg/viewform

And now, a brief word from Management partner Drew (FKA Scarface)…

A Heading Whereunder Drew Invites You to a Dress Party

Webster's Dictionary defines a dress as “an outer garment (as for a woman or girl) usually consisting of a one-piece bodice and skirt.”
https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/dress

Well, listen here, Noah Webster, maybe it's because you've been dead for like 177 years, but have I got news for you: dresses are comfortable, period; gender is a social construct, duh—google Jaden Smith for once in your death. And also, what was Alexander Hamilton really like? Was he like…cute?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noah_Webster
https://www.google.com/search?q=jaden+smith+in+a+dress

Anyhow, Sea Monkeys: hear ye, hear ye. For the last ten years I’ve hosted a party like this to celebrate my birthday in May. This year, on the fifth day of the cruise, there will be a Dress Party on the Sea View Pool deck. Paul says I'm not allowed to say that dresses are required, so I will say that dresses are “vehemently preferred by Drew.” Now, bear with me: the concept for the party is that you wear a dress to it (no other adornments required, but but also you do you; I mean it's a party) and then you have a good time and you compliment everyone in their dresses and you kind of squeal when you see your friends come up to you and are all like oh my god you look SO beauuuuutifulll! To be clear, the theme of the party is simply “a celebration of wearing dresses.“ Everyone is welcome, as are everyone's interpretations of the theme.

Look, I’m wearing flower ears and a dress. I hope you come to my party!

TL;DR: You. In a dress. Day 5. The party starts at 9:30 pm on the Sea View Deck (9 aft), and it'll segue right into DJ Riz's dance party. Pack a dress, wear it to the party, and I will see you there. I, for one, will be wearing my dress all day.

Reminders

  • Please bring any photos you'd like to add to the Memory Wall we'll have on board this year, as discussed in last week's email.
  • Don't forget to go through Online Check-in on the HAL website. https://book2.hollandamerica.com/olci-iu/#/findBooking
  • And since it's time that many of you may start packing (and that some of you are already packed!): don't forget to pack your passports/travel identification!

[February 10, 2020] Coronavirus Update

In preparation for our upcoming voyage, we’re sharing the latest updates regarding the current coronavirus outbreak in Asia, the response from the cruise industry, and specific protocols enacted at our embarkation port and ports of call.

Below is a summary of the most salient points for JoCo Cruise guests:

  • All Holland America Line ships are enacting special industry protocols for addressing coronavirus (including additional onboard environmental disinfection measures).
  • Guests who have visited or transited via airports in China, including Hong Kong and Macau, in the 14 days prior to JoCo Cruise (i.e., Feb 22 or later) will be denied boarding.
  • Guests who have visited or transited via airports in China, including Hong Kong and Macau, in the 20 days prior to JoCo Cruise (i.e., Feb 16 or later) will not be allowed to disembark the ship at any port in the Bahamas, including Half Moon Cay.

If the above restrictions will directly affect your travel plans, please contact us.

We’ll continue to keep a close eye on the situation, and will send an update should there be any material developments. As ever, the health, safety, and well-being of our Sea Monkeys is of paramount importance to us, and we look forward to having an amazing and healthy JoCo Cruise 2020.

For more information, please see this full statement from CLIA, the Cruise Lines International Association, of which Holland America Line is a member. Additional details can also be found in Holland America’s February 10th health advisory letter (subject to future updates).

[February 6, 2020] 2020 Tabletop Game Library; Twit-arr; Time Change

The 2020 JoCo Cruise Tabletop Game Library

Hey, look: our 2020 Tabletop Game Library list is available online now! Our game library, located in the Upper Main Dining Room (Deck 3), contains literally over a ton of games, all available throughout the week (after it opens at 5 pm on Day 1); it's self-serve, using an old fashioned card checkin/checkout system. The list includes all the games in the JoCo Cruise Permanent Collection—plus, its a place to list any games you are bringing that you plan to loan to the library for the week. Use this list to add any games you are bringing, or add a game to the wish list you'd love for someone to bring.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/169MQegnyN_uG93Hzo8ozaBpCSFQLmWpgRCpInReGEYc/edit#gid=1344145710

Please note: we CANNOT except any games on board to add to the permanent collection. Every game we load on the boat goes through INTENSE paperwork and importing inspection, and we can have ZERO more games than we loaded in. If you loan a game to the library this year, please reclaim it at the end of the week.

Twit-arr

Back in the early days of JoCo Cruise, a group of enterprising Sea Monkeys, lamenting the loss of ready and inexpensive access to social media while at sea, created an onboard social network called Twit-arr. It continues to this day as an onboard email/forum/social media server that runs on the ship's wifi network but does NOT require an Internet connection. It's accessible via any computer or mobile device, and free to use.

While The Home Office doesn't produce Twit-arr or provide tech support for it—it's maintained and updated voluntarily by a stalwart group of your fellow Sea Monkeys—we help facilitate its setup.

Please have a look at this overview of this year's edition of Twit-arr. Next week, all 2020 Sea Monkeys with JoCo Cruise User Accounts will be emailed a unique Twit-arr registration code, which you can use to create a Twit-arr account once on board. (Everyone must create a new Twit-arr account for 2020, even if they've had one previously). Sea Monkeys may also visit the JoCo Cruise Info Desk (in the Atrium on Deck 1) to receive a registration code in person. Last year there were pretty long Info Desk lines on Day 1, so your quickest, easiest option will be use the code you receive online. Finally, the Twit-arr team will have a support desk in the Atrium on Day 1 to assist with any potential technical questions or issues.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1flbQyMEye1fwqIS1s692tqbHglV70Sex/view

If anyone in your booking doesn't currently have a JoCo Cruise User Account and wants one (so that they can be emailed a registration code and don't have to wait in line for one), you can invite them to create one.
https://jococruise.com/faq/#how-do-i-invite-a-cabin-mate-to-the

Time Zones and DST

All scheduled JoCo Cruise events will take place on Ship Time—that is, the time set by the captain on the official ship's clocks. Ship Time generally matches the local time of the various ports of call; this can sometimes get tricky when the cruise passes through different time zones. (Just ask Principal Sabourin!) So here's the official word on how Ship Time will work this year:

  • At 2 am on Sun. Mar. 8 (Day 2 of the cruise—or, if you're a night owl, very very late the night of Day 1), Ship Time will move forward to 3 am, as Daylight Saving Time begins.
  • THAT'S IT!

(While the Dominican Republic is in the Atlantic Time Zone, it does not observe Daylight Saving Time, so no more clock adjustments are required.)

Reminders

  • Don't forget to bring any photos you'd like to add to the Memory Wall we'll have on board this year, as discussed in last week's email.
  • As also previously noted, don't forget to go through Online Check-in on the HAL website. https://book2.hollandamerica.com/olci-iu/#/findBooking

[January 31, 2020] Lineup Additions; Memory Wall; Inclusive Restrooms; Sponsor Shout-out

Lineup Additions!

A couple friends are joining the lineup—one “old,” and one “new.” JoCo Cruise 2020 will now be graced with the presence of:

As usual, see our website for our complete lineup.
https://jococruise.com/guests/

JoCo Cruise Memory Wall

To mark our tenth JoCo Cruise sailing, this year on the Nieuw Amsterdam we’re setting up a Memory Wall. We’ll provide the wall (with areas for each year since our inaugural sailing in 2011) and the pushpins; you provide the photos and ephemera! If you’ve got images and/or items from one or more of the JoCo Cruises you’ve participated in, please bring them along and add them to the physical manifestation of our collective memory. (The wall is pretty big, but not infinite, so please scale your contributions accordingly.)

We won't be “cataloging” contributions, so be sure that, worst case, you'll be okay with not getting back any of your photos/contributions. We also cannot mail anyone's items back to them post-cruise; if you want your “stuff” back, it's up to you to collect it at the end of the week.

Gender-Inclusive Restrooms

This year, we will be designating approximately half of the Nieuw Amsterdam's restrooms as Gender-Inclusive. Gender-Inclusive restrooms will be open to users of any gender identity or expression; they will be labeled as such on the door, with icons indicating the type(s) of facilities within (stalls and/or urinals), and will also have a map to all other nearby gender-specific and gender-inclusive restrooms. We'll also provide a map of all restroom types in the “Blue Book” introductory handbook you receive during check-in at the terminal. We've done our best to distribute the restrooms such that, while on any “public area” deck (Decks 1-3 and 9-11), everyone is at most a half-ship length and/or one deck up or down from their preferred restroom type.

Adequately accommodating the needs of of all our guests is very important important to us. We will be collecting feedback regarding this new program during our post-cruise survey.

Reminders

A couple quick reminders:

  • Take some time to go through HAL's Online Check-in process for JoCo Cruise. First names, last names, and gender must match your passport exactly, or you may have trouble boarding the ship. Updates can take HAL up to 3-4 weeks, so if any of the names on your booking are incorrect, please email booking@jococruise.com ASAP. https://book2.hollandamerica.com/olci-iu/#/findBooking
  • Got your passports/travel documents all squared away? Good.

[January 23, 2020] New Monkey Handbook; Online Check-in; Twogether Studios Shout-out

New Monkey Handbook

We know that it can be overwhelming if you're brand new to JoCo Cruise. As such, our friend and longtime Sea Monkey Nicole Dieker helped us develop the JoCo Cruise New Monkey Handbook. This digital guide is designed to give a new person a reasonable overview of how a JoCo Cruise generally works, and especially to provide help and tips for finding new friends and feeling at home on the high seas. It's not intended to be an exhaustive guide to every small facet of the event, but any new Sea Monkey would be well served to give it a read. (Could be useful for experienced Sea Monkeys, too!)
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1T4Zppg5JNShAL6YiI1HORk8yPkyUbo-k4lsjeC77iSw/edit

It even features a “JoCo Cruise Bingo” sheet, if you care to “game-ify” things. YAHTZEE!*

Use the above link to check it out; you also can download the Handbook in various formats (Word doc, PDF, etc.) for loading onto your own device, or—dare we say it?—printing out a physical copy to have with you onboard.

*We're not down with all the newest games. Is this how it goes?

Online Check-in

We'll mention this again, likely several times, but nonetheless…since we are officially within 45 days of departure (!), you can now go through HAL's Online Check-in process for JoCo Cruise. This process MUST be completed no fewer than three days before departure—otherwise you will have to check in MANUALLY at the terminal, which takes EXTRA TIME and that's NO FUN, you wanna get ON BOARD ALREADY, the ship is RIGHT OVER THERE!

Here is the online check in link. You can find more detailed instructions for the whole online check in process in our FAQ.
https://book2.hollandamerica.com/olci-iu/#/findBooking
https://jococruise.com/faq/#how-do-i-check-in-online-for-my-cruise

When checking in, please double-check that everyone is listed correctly:

  1. Your and other guests in your booking's names match your/their travel documents
  2. Your and other guests in your booking's country of citizenship, gender and birthdate match your/their travel documents
  3. All the guests in your booking are listed—our guest listing for your booking shows the following name(s): <names>
  4. If anything is incorrect, please write to us at booking@jococruise.com right away
  5. If there are no errors, please do not write to us

You'll need the following data to start online check in:

  1. Your HAL Booking Number: XXXXXX
  2. Your Last Name

P.S. If you don't have your HAL Booking Number and you booked recently, fret not, we will forward it to you as soon as we receive it from HAL.

[January 16, 2020] ShutterMonkeys; Karaoke; Reminders and Shout-outs

Hi again, Sea Monkeys! Last week, the Home Office went on our “site inspection” cruise. This is where we sail on the Nieuw Amsterdam, meet with all the ship's various departments and go over JoCo Cruise's logistics and needs with them. While we were there, to make sure things were up to the high standards of our Sea Monkeys, we also made sure to sample a number of the fruity and frozen drinks. And the ice cream. And the fajita bar. And the pasta. And the salad bar. And a steak. And okay, maybe one more scoop of ice cream. And…

Did you know that the Nieuw Amsterdam has a dedicated, made-to-order pizza kitchen on the back deck? It does! And because we love you very much, we've made special arrangements to have it remain open 24 hours! Be sure to drop by New York Pizza during the week, day or night. And new cruisers, if you hear any veteran Sea Monkeys refer to it as “Sorrento's,” ask them why to hear an amusing story.

Wanna Be a ShutterMonkey?

The ShutterMonkeys are a group of Photography Volunteers that roam the ship taking awesome pictures of EVERYTHING. Concerts, events, other Sea Monkeys, the ship, ports and beaches, the works! After the cruise, we’ll gather all the photos, sort through them, and Post them online, which will be digitally distributed to every attendee FOR FREE.

Prerequisites for being a Shutter Monkey:

  • Have a good camera (preferably a DSLR or Mirrorless high end camera)
  • Have a keen eye for action and people photography
  • Love to take pictures of people having fun (and having fun while doing it)
  • Have previously sailed on a JoCo Cruise (we don’t want your first cruise to be spent working!)

If you are interested in becoming a ShutterMonkey, please e-mail Steve Petrucelli at spetrucelli@gmail.com to sign up!

Karaoke Song List

As usual, there will be karaoke events on board this year. And we're once again using the massive song library of our friend Joel Stitzel (thanks, Joel!), and the events will once again be hosted by Sea Monkey Randy Parcel (hi again, Randy!).
http://www.infernalsingalongmachine.com/

We will have several physical copies of the complete list available, it's a BIG book—25,376 songs' worth!—so we're also making it available for you to download. If you're interested in doing karaoke this year, we strongly recommend you grab the song list now.

You can connect to and copy this Google Sheet version of the list. You can also go to “File - Download As” to download it in various formats (PDF, Excel file, etc.).
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1dFxwX3V9oBgh42Wd-B7DeM-Nxj5l_qxJzS1WVA_l3WA/edit#gid=1583154030

And now, a series of reminders:

Special Requirements Form Reminder

If you have any special health requirements while on board—e.g., mobility, respiratory or allergy needs, medication storage, needle disposal, etc.—please make sure you fill out HAL's Special Requirements Form online before sailing. (Have your HAL booking number handy when doing so.)
https://book.hollandamerica.com/specialServices/login.action

If you are pregnant, HAL requires you to submit a physician's letter stating the expected due date, your medical fitness to travel, and that the pregnancy is not high risk. Please email that letter directly to HAL Guest Accessibility at Halw_access@hollandamerica.com. (Please don't email this letter to JoCo Cruise.)

NOTE: For those requiring CPAP machines, the ship has ordered plenty of extension cords (because there are no US-style plugs next to the stateroom beds), so you shouldn't need to pack one. And please note when filling out your Special Requirements Form if you will need distilled water, so that the ship will have an adequate supply for everyone.

HAL Mariner Number Reminder

Reminder to all of you who are members of HAL's Mariner Society: January 20th is the deadline to fill out out our Mariner Society Number Form (for yourself and/or anyone else in your booking) if you want to earn credit for our sailing and to qualify for special discounts and amenities. After that date, you'll need to call HAL directly.
https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/mariner-society.html https://booking.jococruise.com/joco-cruise-2020-mariner-number/

If filling out for someone else, please make sure you have their accurate name, email address and HAL Mariner Number.

Please note that, while your HAL Mariner Society amenities/benefits will apply on JoCo Cruise (applicable discounts in the shops, etc.), there will be no Mariner Society events (exclusive cocktail party, etc.) that week.

Passport Reminder

We know we've beat this drum a lot, but it bears repeating. You still have time to get or renew your passport (and/or passport card), if necessary—though at this point you will probably need to get it expedited to be sure to receive it in time. You can research different options online for expediting the passport process; but either way, don't delay.

While certain other forms of identification are acceptable for boarding—a passport card, a state-issued Enhanced Driver’s License (EDL), and some other approved documents—a valid passport or passport card will be the surest way to avoid any issues that may complicate your boarding process. Please see the “Identification Requirements” section of HAL's Know Before You Go page for complete information regarding identification requirements for US citizens, non-US citizens, and children.
https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/faq/know-before-you-go.html

Sponsor Shout-outs

As we approach sailing, we'll be recognizing our sponsors, who do cool stuff for us. Starting with…

  • Special thanks to Greater Than Games, makers of a ridiculously large number of fantastic games, including the Sentinels of the Multiverse series and Spirit Island. They also provide us extensive logistical support from their facilities in St. Louis, where pretty much every physical item we load onto the ship has been received, counted, repacked and loaded onto pallets.
    https://greaterthangames.com/
  • Similarly-special thanks to Fiona's Fineries, makers of fine, handmade Medieval style clothing, and whose Christine Fellows oversees our Crafting Room and makes it such a great experience.

[December 20, 2019] New JoCo Cruise Forums—for Finding Roommates and General Discussion

Looking for Roommates? Check Out Our New Forums

Our Programming Monkeys have been tinkering around under the hood for a while, and we've got a brand new feature available: JoCo Cruise Discussion Forums!
https://forums.jococruise.com/

If you either have a booking (for either 2020 or 2021) and are seeking roommates to join you, or are seeking to join an existing booking, we encourage you to post your search here! These forums will be replacing our “Roommate Seekers listserv” for these purposes. (We'll keep the listserv running until we've confirmed that all still-open posts have migrated to the new forums, after which point we'll be phasing it out.)

The space is also designed to be a spot where Sea Monkeys past, present and future can hang out and chat about all things JoCo-Cruise-ical. Hop on in and post some content! (NOTE: these forums are not intended to replace or supplant the existing Facebook Sea Monkey groups; rather, they are offered as an additional space, particularly for those who choose or prefer not to use Facebook.)

Head on over to https://forums.jococruise.com to join up. If you're new to using forums, be sure to check out the message you receive from ”@discobot“ when you join; it will take you through a tutorial of using and navigating the forums. And tell your friends—these forums are open to everyone! (Particularly anyone who's looking to join an existing booking.)

IMPORTANT: if you're seeking roommates, be sure to read the pinned “Seeking roommates? READ THIS FIRST” topic for general formatting guidelines before you post anything. This will make things easier both for you and the people seeking such listings.

Finally: the JoCo Cruise Forums are hosted by discourse.org and sponsored by JoCo Cruise, but run by the Sea Monkeys themselves. The Home Office are not responsible for any content found in the forums, and we request that all participants abide by the JoCo Cruise Code of Conduct when posting. While we are providing these forums as a resource, JoCo Cruise does not provide any direct assistance to people seeking roommates.

[December 16, 2019] Merch Store: Umm...Have You Seen Our Keys?

ALERT: Merch Store Open 48 Extra Hours 'cause Paul Lost the Damn Keys

The JoCo Cruise 2020 Online Merch Store was supposed to close for good tonight. But while we were getting things ready this afternoon, Paul slapped his pants pockets and got a pained expression. Despite his repeated protestations of “not my fault” and attempts to blame it on the Inventory Monkeys messing with his stuff, the keys to the front door are missing. (Yes, we looked under the couch cushions; that's the first place we looked.)
https://booking.jococruise.com/2020/shop/merch/index/

Thanks to the busy Holiday Season, it's gonna take us two full days to get new keys cut. So for the time being, we must remain open and keep the store staffed 24/7. (Paul gets the first overnight shift.)

But this is, we promise, your very last chance to buy JoCo Cruise 2020 merch at their lowest available prices! The merch store will only stay open through Wednesday, December 18th. (Also, we secretly think it may have indeed been the Inventory Monkeys, but we won't tell Paul that because it's too much fun to watch him get all mad and defensive.)

Side note: the challenge coins were errantly marked as “sold out” for the past day or two, but they are in fact still available. So if you wanted one and thought they were gone, you've still got the chance to grab one. (Or several.)

[December 13, 2019] Online Merch Store - Last Chance; 2020 SOLD OUT; Your HAL Mariner Number; Other Things

JoCo Cruise 2020 is SOLD OUT!

At this point, JoCo Cruise is officially sold out. Thank each and every one of you for being a part of our crazy little yearly boat trip!

PLEASE NOTE: while 2020 cabins are no longer available for public sale, some may still come available (due to cancellations, etc.). So if you have friends or family still interested in attending, it's still worth their while to join our 2020 Wait List.
https://jococruise.com/2020-wait-list/

Additionally, if you either have a booking and are still looking for roommates, or know someone who is looking to join an existing booking as a roommate, please see our “roommates” FAQ item for available roommate-finding options.
https://jococruise.com/faq/#where-can-i-go-to-find-roommates

Online Merch Store Closes Dec. 16th

One more reminder that the JoCo Cruise 2021 Online Merch Store closes in just a few days, on December 16th. This will be your last chance to get the best price on this year's t-shirts, poster, hoodies, lapel pins, challenge coins, luggage tags and playmats. If you want to purchase them onboard, they'll be sold in the ship's store with an associated price markup. And we may well sell out of some/many items! Finally, once the cruise is over, that's it! The 2020 online store won't re-open again post-cruise.
https://booking.jococruise.com/2020/shop/merch/index/

Helper Monkey Signups

We could still use some more folks willing to be Helper Monkeys—that is, to volunteer some time while onboard to help monitor events, staff the Info Desk, sell artist merch at shows, and other tasks. Please check out our Helper Monkeys page to see all the different ways you can help out onboard. Once you've looked over the options, if you're interested in joining the ranks, you can fill out our Helper Monkey Submission Form.

Internet on the Nieuw Amsterdam

Here's the latest word we've got from HAL regarding available Internet packages for JoCo Cruise 2020:

While on board, you can purchase daily Internet access at three different connection speeds:

  • Social: $14.99/day
  • Surf: $24.99/day
  • Premium: $29.99/day

You can also purchase a “full voyage” (7 day) plan while on board for the following rates:

  • Social: $55.99
  • Surf: $79.99
  • Premium: $139.99

Finally, you can purchase the above Premium “full voyage” (7-day) plan online pre-cruise via the HAL website for $111.99—a 20% savings vs. buying it on board. (Log into your booking; “Internet” is available under “Cruise Activities - Gifts and Indulgences”.)
https://book2.hollandamerica.com/secondaryFlow/login

While Internet speeds and reliability onboard JoCo Cruise have improved greatly in recent years—the Premium package apparently supports streaming—bear in mind that speeds will likely be slower than you're used to on land. Internet connection will also be available in Santo Domingo and Grand Turk, either free or for a nominal fee, at many local restaurants, shops and other areas. Again, your mileage may vary.

Your HAL Mariner Number

As some of our experienced cruisers may already know, Holland America's Mariner Society is a rewards program that allows you to earn credit towards amenities and benefits on future HAL cruises. (A sort of “frequent sailor program,” if you will.)
https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/mariner-society.html

If you or anyone in your booking has a HAL Mariner Society Number and you'd like to “attach” it to your JoCo Cruise booking so that you can earn credits from your JoCo Cruise sailing, you can do so by filling out our Mariner Society Number Form between now and January 20. (You'll need to be logged in to your User Account to use the form.) If you don't you'll need to call HAL directly, and who wants to talk on a phone if they don't have to?
https://booking.jococruise.com/joco-cruise-2020-mariner-number/

You can fill out the form for yourself and/or anyone else in your booking. If filling out for someone else, please make sure you have their accurate name, email address and HAL Mariner Number.

Please note that some HAL Mariner Society amenities/benefits may not be applicable on full ship charters, including JoCo Cruise. But if you take other HAL cruises, it's a great way to earn some neat gifts, cool discounts, free dinners, etc.

[December 5, 2019] Lineup Additions; Donation Matching; Accessibility; Helper Monkey Signups and Other Reminders

Happy National Digestion Week, everyone. As we lurch headlong into the heart of the holiday season, here's some stuff to remind you that in a few short months we'll be headed for smooth seas and sandy beaches and frozen drinks…

Lineup Additions

The JoCo Cruise 2020 lineup has gotten this much awesomer [holds hands very far apart] thanks to the addition of the following new performers and guests:

We can also now confirm the following podcasts will also be recording live on JoCo Cruise 2020:

You can, as always, view our complete current lineup on our website.

Donation Matching

Between now and December 13th, The Conservation Fund's board will be matching all individual donations, including those for our JoCo Cruise Carbon Roadmap campaign (up to $150k). We encourage all Sea Monkeys to join us and donate to the Fund to offset the environmental impact generated by personal travel to and from the cruise. 100% of all donations go directly to The Conservation Fund.

As a reminder, our site has a page detailing the full JoCo Cruise Carbon Roadmap and our ongoing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint.

Accessibility

If you have any medical, accessibility, dietary or other special requirements, please note that we've assembled an Accessibility page on our website compiling necessary and useful information and resources for folks who need or wish to avail themselves of the ship’s accessibility features and practices. This includes the JoCo Cruise 2020 Accessibility Guide, a handy map that indicates the Nieuw Amsterdam's accessible restrooms and accessibility routes. There's also a link to HAL's own thorough FAQ regarding accessibility, as well as to HAL's Special Requirements Information (SRI) form, which should be filled out by any guest with medical, accessibility, dietary or any other special requirements.

JoCo Cruise 2021 - Save the Date!

Some Qs and some As:

Q: Will there be a JoCo Cruise 2021?
A: YES! 2021 will also be our 10th anniversary sailing, for the record.

Q: When will it be?
A: March 6-13, 2021.

Q: Where will it be sailing from?
A: Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Q: Wait—isn't 2020 the 10th sailing? So how can 2021 be the 10th anniversary?
A: Well, the day you get married isn't your first anniversary. Same thing with cruises: the 11th sailing (2021) is the 10th anniversary.

Q: Oh, I get it. Numbers are weird, huh?
A: Sometimes, yes.

Q: When will we find out about the itinerary and pricing and when booking opens?
A: Soon™.

Q: Okay, good talk. Thank you.
A: That's not really a question, but you're very welcome.

Happy end-of-the-year,

THO.

[November 21, 2019] Red/Gold Team Assignments; Fixed Seating Requests; Reminders & Deadlines

Red/Gold Team Assignments

Your booking has been assigned to: «DinnerSeating»

As a reminder, Red Team members attend the Early Dinner and the Late Main Concert; Gold Team members attend the Early Main Concert and the Late Dinner.

(You either requested this seating in your User Account, or were assigned it after either indicating no preference or making no selection.) This team assignment should be reflected in your JCC User Account page-the selection menu will be defaulted to your assigned team.

PLEASE NOTE: currently, the Red Team (Early Dinner/Late Concert) is “overbooked”—i.e., more people requested the Red Team than there are seats available in the Mainstage Theater. We are seeking volunteers to switch from Gold Team to Red Team; if you're willing to make this switch, please email booking@jococruise.com ASAP.

Correction:
PLEASE NOTE: currently, the Red Team (Early Dinner/Late Concert) is “overbooked”—i.e., more people requested the Red Team than there are seats available in the Mainstage Theater. We are seeking volunteers to switch FROM RED Team TO GOLD Team; if you're willing to make this switch, please email booking@jococruise.com ASAP.

During boarding, team members will receive an appropriately colored Lanyard for their badge. This badge and lanyard will serve as your pass for attending all Main Concerts, including the land festival in Santo Domingo. Please make sure you have them with you at these events for proper entry. (No other events will be lanyard-dependent).

And to be clear: these “teams” are not rivals. Rather, just like in the original Star Wars, they are allies working together towards a common goal: creating the best JoCo Cruise ever. (And destroying any Death Stars we might encounter.)

Fixed Dinner Seating Requests

As per the above, everyone has been assigned to either the Early Dinner or Late Dinner; within those assignments, seating is generally open—from night to night, you can sit at whichever table you like.

Some people may prefer to have fixed seating for the duration of the week—either to better accommodate special dietary needs or restrictions, or to stay with a particular group of family/friends, or what have you.

If you want fixed seating at dinner, you can fill out our Fixed Dinner Seating Request Form for your booking (or just for some members of your booking). You may also request to be seated with friends from other bookings; if you plan to do that, please confirm ahead of time that you're all in the same dinner seating. This form will only be open until December 16, 2019, so don't dawdle if you'd like to request fixed seating!
https://booking.jococruise.com/joco-cruise-2020-family-seating-fixed-dinner-seating-request-form/

In years past, some families with young children have requested to sit with/near other families at dinner. We've set aside a (non-mandatory) “Family Seating” area in the dining room. There's a section of the above form where you can request this, if you're interested. Doing so doesn't commit you to sitting there or assign you a table; it merely gives us a sense of how large we should make that area for each seating.

[November 13, 2019] Shore Excursions - One Final Email

A Couple Final Shore Excursions Notes

We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding as Shore Excursion booking has rolled out. We have a couple final notes for you…

We were given incorrect info re: call-in numbers. The following numbers are confirmed to be correct now:

  • To book airport-to-ship and/or ship-to-airport transfers via HAL, call 866-929-2332
  • To book beverage packages and/or reservations for the onboard Retreat cabanas: call 800-541-1576

Finally: we are receiving reports that some people are still having trouble seeing and booking shore excursions—i.e., you go to your booking, but there are no options listed for any of the days of our trip. We have contacted HAL and are awaiting further word on the issue.

BUT in the meantime, if you encounter this problem, please try the following steps, as we've found it's worked for some who've encountered it (including a couple of us here at THO):

  1. Make sure you are logged out of your HAL account
  2. Go to the the following page on the HAL site: https://book2.hollandamerica.com/secondaryFlow/login/booking
  3. Enter your HAL Booking Number and last name.
  4. Check the Shore Excursions link and see if there are now excursions listed for the days of our sailing.

If, after attempting the above, you are still encountering problems, please call HAL Shore Excursions directly at 888-425-9376 (Mon-Fri 6a-6:00p Pacific, Sat-Sun 8a-4:30p Pacific) and have your HAL booking number handy, and they will work to clear up any further issues for you.

Be cruise,

THO.

[November 12, 2019] REMINDER: Shore Excursions Online Booking Begins Wed., Nov. 13th

Shore Excursions - Tomorrow (Nov. 13th)

One final reminder that you will be able to once again browse and purchase shore excursions and other amenities on the Holland America website on Wed., Nov. 13th at 12 noon Eastern. (As has been noted, this is a manual process, so they may not come online exactly at 12 noon, or all at once.)

Create/log into your account on the Holland America website; if your cruise isn't listed under “My Bookings”, you can search for it using your HAL Booking Number (which, again, is XXXXXX). Under the Shore Excursions tab, you can browse to view the excursions, available on each day. You can also purchase spa services and specialty dining reservations online.
https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/log-in.html
https://book2.hollandamerica.com/secondaryFlow/login

PLEASE NOTE: airport-to-ship and/or ship-to-airport transfers, beverage packages, and reservations for the ship's onboard Retreat cabanas, are not available online; to purchase those, have your HAL Booking Number handy and call HAL's Key Accounts department at (866) 929-2332. (Don't call the the usual reservation numbers listed on HAL's site for those items; because we are a charter, they will just refer you to Key Accounts.)

[Edit November 13, 2019] Please note that THO was given incorrect info previously. The numbers to call to book the following amenities are correct:
- airport-to-ship and/or ship-to-airport transfers: call 866-929-2332
- beverage packages, and reservations for the onboard Retreat cabanas: call 800-541-1576

[November 7, 2019] JoCo Cruise 2021 Dates Announced; 2020 Travel Planning; Meatless Monday & Beyond Meats; Various Reminders & Deadlines

JoCo Cruise 2021 - Save the Date!

Some Qs and some As:

Q: Will there be a JoCo Cruise 2021?
A: YES! 2021 will be our 10th anniversary sailing.

Nov. 15 Deadline for Preferences and Past Cruises

Reminder that you have until November 15th to check the following via your User Account (https://booking.jococruise.com/2020/account/home/) and update as necessary:

  • Your dinner/main concert seating preference (i.e., Red Team/Gold Team), if you have one. (Your booking's currently listed preference is Red / Gold Team (Dinner/Late)) Any change must be made by your booking's Primary Contact.
  • Your bed configuration preference (Your booking's currently listed preference is separate / together) Any change must be made by your booking's Primary Contact.
  • Your Past Cruises. If your User Account's Past Cruises info is incorrect, please contact booking@jococruise.com ASAP.

There and Back Again: Pre/Post-cruise Info

If you haven't started making plans to get to Fort Lauderdale and back—or even if you have!—our 2020 Pre/Post-Cruise Info page has lots of info to help you with your pre- and post-cruise travel plans, and with boarding and disembarking. Dates, logistics, helpful tips, etc.—don't put off your planning to the last minute, slowpokes!
https://jococruise.com/pre-cruise/

Please note: unlike previous years, JoCo Cruise is not arranging hotel room blocks for our JoCo Cruise 2020 attendees. In other words, there are no “official” JoCo Cruise hotels this year. You are more than welcome to organize amongst yourselves, share research on area hotel rates and availability, etc.; but JoCo Cruise will not be securing any “special rates” at any area hotels. If you’re looking for consensus on what hotels other attendees are staying at, we suggest joining and asking the 2020 Sea Monkey Facebook group.
https://www.facebook.com/groups/JoCoCruise2020

Meatless Monday and Beyond Meat

As part of our effort to mitigate the environmental effects of JoCo Cruise, we’ll be encouraging attendees to load up on veggies on Day 3 as part of the Meatless Monday initiative. We’ll be working with the culinary wizards on the Nieuw Amsterdam to put their best veg foot forward that day. (Meatless Monday on JoCo Cruise is only suggested/encouraged, not mandatory; plenty of fantastic meat-inclusive options will still be available.)
https://www.meatlessmonday.com/

Also, we’ve arranged with Holland America to make Beyond Burgers and Beyond Sausages available every day* at the Dive-In grill in the Lido Mid-ship Pool area on Deck 9 (in addition to their usual selection of burgers and dogs).

For more info on how including more plant-based foods helps the environment, check out these facts on the Meatless Monday site.
https://www.meatlessmonday.com/research/environment/

*Or at least until we eat all the Beyond Meat they’re able to fit in the ship’s hold. Because them’s good eatin’.

[October 31, 2019] Dinner Seatings, Bed Configs, Team Leaders and Opt-out, Shadow TV, and Some Other Reminders

Boo! We're a ghost! There's your obligatory Hallowe'en content for the opening of this email.

As our sailing date creeps inexorably (but happily) closer, there's a bunch of things we need to review and/or select regarding your booking. Apologies in advance for the wall o' text…

NOTE: only the Primary Contact on a reservation can make any changes to your booking's dinner/concert and bed config preferences, per below; if you are not your booking's Primary Contact, please convey any desired changes to them.

Dinner / Main Concert Preference
(a.k.a., “Red Team / Gold Team”)

On most days, there will be two Main Concerts in the ship's Mainstage Theater and two corresponding dinner seatings: early (5 pm) and late (7:30 pm). People on the “Red Team” will go to the early dinner seating, then attend the late show; people on the “Gold Team” attend the early show, then go to the late dinner seating. (NOTE: Both the early and late shows will have the same lineup.)

Your current team preference is listed in your user account as:
Red / Gold (Dinner / Concert)

If you login to your User Account (https://booking.jococruise.com/2020/account/home/), you'll see in the “Booking Preferences” section where you can select your team preference for Red Team (Early Dinner / Late Concert), Gold Team (Late Dinner / Early Concert), or No Preference:

If you have a preference, please have your booking's Primary Contact go there and select one before November 15th, when dinner seatings will be officially assigned. (As noted above, while your booking's Red/Gold Team preference selection is visible to all booking occupants with a User Account, only your booking's Primary Contact can make changes.) We will do our best to accommodate all requests, but please note that expressing a preference does not guarantee your being assigned that seating.

NOTE: Dinner seating on JoCo Cruise is “open seating”—i.e., tables are not assigned, you can sit anywhere you like each night. In a future email (after Red Team and Gold Team membership has been assigned), we will offer the option for “fixed seating” for people who prefer to have the same table assignment every night (e.g., a large group of friends, people with special dietary needs, etc.). If you plan to request fixed seating, please make sure everyone else in your expected Fixed Seating party has selected the same Red/Gold Team preference.

Bed Configuration

Each cabin has a choice of bed configuration for the two main beds: separate (i.e., two single beds) or together (i.e., pushed together into one queen-size bed). Your current bed configuration is listed in your user account as:
separate / together

If you would like to change this, the Primary Contact on your reservation can do so via their User Account (https://booking.jococruise.com/2020/account/home/) in the “Booking Preferences” section. The menu to make this selection looks like this:

(Once again, while your booking's bed configuration is visible to all booking occupants with a User Account, only your booking's Primary Contact can make changes.)

Confirm Your Returning Monkey Status

As with last year, User Accounts are now linked to each guest's past JoCo Cruise history.

We want to be sure our Returning Monkey data is accurate though, so we need your help! Please check out the Returning Monkey status for yourself and those in your booking via your User Account (https://booking.jococruise.com/2020/account/home/) in the “Your Past Cruises” section:

If we're missing any sailings for you or anyone in your booking, please email booking@jococruise.com so we can update our records.

Hint: the best way to maintain an accurate cruise history is to have your own JoCo Cruise User Account that you “link” to your booking each year you attend. If you have missing cruise history info, it's likely your User Account isn't properly linked to this year's booking. We can help! Just reply to this email with the details.

Red / Gold Leader, and Opting Out

Back when the JoCo Cruise audience was small enough that we could exist as a group within a larger “normal” cruise, a Monarch of the Seas was chosen among the Sea Monkeys by random drawing. The monarch was awarded front row seats for themselves and a consort of their choice for every show and was frequently introduced with fanfare, but was also tasked with a number of monarchical tasks, such as judging the Fancy Pants Parade and declaring a superior taco shell.

When the event became large enough to require chartering an entire ship, having a single Monarch became impractical. In order to have a recognized personage at each main show, the tradition was altered and the positions renamed to Red Leader and Gold Leader.

If your number comes up in the drawing for a Leader, you will be called out by name and presented with a talisman that you can choose to wear to be recognized as such anywhere on board. You will, at times, be the center of attention. Each Leader still receives front row Main Concert seats for themselves and a companion, and as much or as little fanfare and duties as they wish to undertake.

If you prefer not to be considered for the Red/Gold Leader random drawing, just fill out our handy Red Leader/Gold Leader Opt-out Form. (You'll be prompted to log in to your User Account if not already logged in.) You can use this form to opt-out for yourself and any or all other members of your booking.
https://booking.jococruise.com/joco-cruise-2020-red-leadergold-leader-opt-out-form/
PDF of form (not for submission use).

Salutations / Pronouns Reminder

REMINDER: The Nieuw Amsterdam defaults to using “Mr.” or “Ms.“ when addressing guests in written communication, based on the gender listed on their travel documents. If you prefer the Nieuw Amsterdam use a different salutation from the above to address you in correspondence—particularly if the automatically assigned prefix is not in line with your gender identity—you may fill out our Salutation Change Request form.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdeyzYjEblDI6W00s7ur9EqVdKJt4Mh40oxlyv_UBx0FWg9_A/viewform

Shadow TV

Every stateroom TV on the Nieuw Amsterdam has on-demand programming, allowing us to make available rebroadcasts of Mainstage performances and events, some movies and shows of our choosing, and even pictures of cats.

And as with previous years, one of these on-demand “channels” will be dedicated to passenger-created content—”Shadow TV“. Have you made something you think the other Sea Monkeys would enjoy watching? Use the Shadow TV Channel Content Submission Form to submit original content for broadcast on board now until December 15, 2019.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScXz7gVTlCBKSzPTfBcgT4EwxTUJCUxGt-wjLQ3GIZkB3wAeg/viewform

IMPORTANT: You MUST control all rights to all content (audio and video) in your submission. Don't submit, say, a “Weird Al” video, or an original video with someone else's music on the soundtrack.

Please use the above form to submit all media via a download/cloud storage service (Google Drive, Dropbox, box.com, etc.), DO NOT email it directly. No Flash video, and please no obscure/esoteric video formats. No YouTube videos; all submissions must be downloadable.

The Management will review all submissions and reserves the right to approve or reject submissions for any reason, including (but not limited to) copyright violations and/or violations of the JoCo Cruise Code of Conduct.

[October 30, 2019] Your HAL Cabin Number and Booking Number

Here's Your 2020 Cabin Number!

Your booking has been officially assigned a cabin on the Nieuw Amsterdam for JoCo Cruise 2020! Huzzah!

Your booking's cabin number is XXXXX

You can view more cabin details (including a personal note from us regarding your placement!) and get a link to view the Nieuw Amsterdam Deck Map in your JoCo Cruise user account.
https://booking.jococruise.com/2020/account/home/

And Here's Your Holland America Booking Number

Your Holland America Booking Number is XXXXXX

Once you've logged into your HAL Account on hollandamerica.com—or, if you're new, created one—select “Already Booked - Manage My Bookings” and use this booking number. Once complete, you'll be able to pre-purchase onboard amenities (drink packages, specialty restaurant reservations, spa packages, etc.) and shore excursions (see below).

You will also use this number to go through HAL's online check-in process (see below). All guests should complete this process (or have it completed for them) no fewer than 72 hours prior to our March 7th departure.
https://book2.hollandamerica.com/olci-iu/#/findBooking

This email was sent to any guests in your booking who have user accounts AND have a booking number assigned to them already. You can view the Booking Number status for all guests in your booking at your JoCo Cruise User Account.

Holland America Online Check-In (Booking Number XXXXXX)

Each person in your booking will need to complete online check-in (or have it completed for them) and print their Boarding Pass no fewer than 72 hours prior to our departure on March 7th, 2020. Online check-in is available now on Holland America's website. You'll need your HAL Booking Number (listed above) for this. Additional information can be found in our “How do I check-in online for my cruise?” FAQ.
https://jococruise.com/faq/#how-do-i-check-in-online-for-my-cruise

We'll email everyone a check-in reminder closer to sailing. (Probably several!)

Technical Note: If you've changed any of your booking info (such as cabin number or last name) in the last few weeks, HAL may not have this update yet. Don't worry, THEY WILL! (Please allow a few weeks for processing.) Please don't check in online until your information is correct on the HAL website.

Medical/Dietary/Special Needs

For guests with medical, dietary or other special needs, Holland America has a thorough FAQ regarding the subject. Passengers with such needs should submit a Special Requirements Information (SRI) form via the HAL site. (You'll need your HAL booking number to complete the form.)
https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/accessibility.html
https://book.hollandamerica.com/specialServices/login.action

NOTE: guests with non-life threatening dietary restrictions should contact the Ship Services Department at 1-800-541-1576 and ask them to add that information as a note in your booking.

ALSO NOTE: You must submit special needs requests to HAL, which handles them directly. JoCo Cruise cannot process these requests.

For detailed information on accessibility of shore excursions, HAL strongly recommends contacting their Shore Excursions Department prior to embarkation at 1-888-425-9376 (or locally at 206-626-7320) or visiting the Shore Excursions Office on board.

(This information is also contained in our “I have medical, dietary, or other special requests for the cruise line. What should I do?” FAQ.)
https://jococruise.com/faq/#i-have-medical-dietary-or-other

Shore Excursions (“EXC Tours”)

Holland America offers numerous activities and tours in our various ports of call (biking, snorkeling, walking and boat tours, etc.) for pre-purchase via your HAL account, as well as on board at the ship's EXC Tours desk.

Shore excursions for our sailing are not yet listed—we currently expect HAL to make Shore excursions available for viewing and pre-purchase on November 13. (We'll send an additional email to remind you when Shore excursions become available.)

[October 24, 2019] JoCo Cruise Carbon Roadmap, Shadow Cruise, Helper Monkeys, and Club SRO Last Call

Hi, gang. Today's email is positively overstuffed with important things. No time to argue, we're throwing you the idol right now, you throw us the whip…

The JoCo Cruise Carbon Roadmap

After numerous months of researching the topic and consulting with experts, JoCo Cruise is proud to announce The JoCo Cruise Carbon Roadmap, our new initiative to mitigate our event's carbon footprint.
https://jococruise.com/carbon/

Our Carbon Roadmap page provides an overview of the current steps we're taking and plan to take in the future, as well as a link to our comprehensive Carbon Strategy Roadmap whitepaper, which details a thorough breakdown of our strategy and the reasoning and science behind it.

The page also includes a link to a fundraising page where Sea Monkeys (or anyone!) can donate to The Conservation Fund’s Upper Ouachita National Wildlife project, with the aim of mitigating the carbon cost of Sea Monkey air travel to and from current and previous JoCo Cruises.
https://tcf-businesspartnerships.everydayhero.com/us/joco-cruise-2020

The Shadow Cruise

As those of you who've been with us before are aware, every year we provide space on board and in the schedule for the Sea Monkeys to put together and run their own events throughout the week. This program, is now known as the Shadow Cruise, and it rivals our official programming in both scale and awesomeness. From gaming to performing to crafting to jamming to stargazing to yoga to…well, you get the idea.
https://jococruise.com/shadowcruise/

Drop by our new Shadow Cruise page for more information, and if you're inspired to submit your own Shadow Cruise event(s), hop on over to our Shadow Cruise Event Submission Form. (You'll be prompted to log in to your User Account if you're not already logged in.)
https://booking.jococruise.com/joco-cruise-2020-shadow-cruise-event-requests/

Helper Monkeys

Every year, JoCo Cruise stays metaphorically afloat thanks to the help of an army of attendees who donate time on board to help monitor events, staff the Info Desk, sell artist merch at shows, and a ton of other tasks. We call these stalwart volunteers our Helper Monkeys. And you can be one too*!

Check out our new Helper Monkeys page to see all the different ways you can help out onboard. Once you've looked over the options, if you're interested in joining the ranks, you can fill out our Helper Monkey Volunteer Form. (You'll be prompted to login to your User Account if you're not already logged in.) Thanks in advance to everyone who's able to join the ranks!

https://jococruise.com/helper-monkeys/
https://booking.jococruise.com/joco-cruise-2020-helper-monkey-submission/

*NOTE: we do not use first-time Sea Monkeys as Helper Monkeys. We appreciate first-timers’ willingness to help out, but it’s important to us that people on their first JoCo Cruise spend that time enjoying and familiarizing themselves with the event and the Sea Monkey community.

Merch Store

In case you somehow missed it in our last email, the JoCo Cruise 2020 Merch Store has once again appeared Brigadoon-like from the mists, like a Spirit Halloween pop-up store but with a cruise theme and not in an old, closed carpet or mattress store location.
https://booking.jococruise.com/2020/shop/merch/

It's stuffed to the gills with awesome JoCo Cruise 2020-themed items, including t-shirts, hoodies, posters, lapel pins, challenge coins, luggage tags and playmats. Drop by today, our sales staff is friendly and no-pressure.

Club SRO - Last Call

This is your final call: a small handful of spots remain available in Club SRO. (What is Club SRO, you ask? Check out our FAQ.) If you're attending JoCo Cruise 2020, don't care so much about having guaranteed seats to the nightly main concerts, and are interested in getting a $125 credit to your onboard stateroom account, please fill out our online “I Want to Join Club SRO” application. Separate applications must be submitted for each individual seeking to join Club SRO.

[October 3, 2019] JoCo Cruise 2020 Merch Store Open NOW!

Hi! We're back again already, because there's too much important stuff to wait. Specifically:

JoCo Cruise 2020 Merch Store is NOW OPEN!

The JoCo Cruise 2019 Online Merch Store is OPEN FOR BUSINESS! Now is your chance to pre-order official JoCo Cruise Merchandise.
https://booking.jococruise.com/2020/shop/merch/index/

This year's artwork by our friend James Provost, who did our “sprue” art last year, and this year he's completely outdone himself with an “exploded view” of the Nieuw Amsterdam mid-JoCo Cruise. It's packed with awesome details and Easter eggs; here's a link to a hi-res version for you to peruse and see just how awesome it is.
https://jamesprovost.com/
https://jococruise.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/2020-poster-hi-res.jpg

For JoCo Cruise 2020, we've got unisex and fitted t-shirts (in two colors), posters, hoodies, challenge coins, lapel pins, luggage tags, and playmats (for all your dice rolling and card-tapping-and-untapping needs). Between now and December 16, 2019, you can go to the store to place orders—you'll be automatically prompted to log into your JCC User Account if you aren't already logged in; payment is processed via PayPal. Your completed order balance and payment will be reflected in your User Account. All ordered merchandise will be delivered directly to your stateroom on Day 1 of JoCo Cruise 2020. How convenient! And no postage & handling charges!

Our 2020 merch will be available on board the cruise as well, but all on-board sales must go through the ship's store system, which adds a significant markup. And once the cruise is over, that's it; the store won't re-open post-cruise, so don't miss your chance. And you'll never get better prices on JoCo Cruise 2020 merch than right now!

Have We Mentioned the Lineup?

In case you somehow missed the email from two days ago, we've announced our initial lineup for the 2020 cruise. It's chock full o' rich, tasty performer/musician/writer-y goodness, and there's still more to come!
https://jococruise.com/guests/

Policy Change for Primary Contact Transfers and Berth Cancellations

Please note that our policy regarding Primary Contact Transfers (i.e., transferring the “main contact” for a booking to another person) has changed—specifically, the administrative fees have increased as we get closer to our sailing date. The cutoff date for allowing Primary Contact Transfers is now later than previously listed.

Additionally, the administrative fee structure for berth cancellations has also been altered—fees for berth cancellations closer to our sailing date have increased.

Please see our “Am I allowed to make changes to my booking?” FAQ for complete details on the fee schedules for the above items.

And the best part is, there's still plenty more to come! We'll be announcing more additions to the lineup in the coming weeks and months. See the complete current lineup and read up on our guest artists on our Performers and Guests page.

Theme Days

Are we done announcing things in this email? No, we are not! Here's the official list of the JoCo Cruise 2020 Theme Days:

  • Day 1 (Sat. Mar. 7): Welcome, New Monkeys!
An annual tradition, on Day 1 we plan numerous activities designed to welcome our first-timers into the JoCo Cruise experience. Make a particular effort on this day to seek out new Monkeys and help show them what a great decision they've made by joining us!
  • Day 2 (Sun. Mar. 8): Heroes Day
Heroes come in all stripes. Some wear capes, some wear lab coats; some achieve great renown, some just quietly help others without fanfare. On this day, celebrate your own favorite heroes as you choose to—cosplay as them, hold a Shadow Cruise event to tell others about them, or whatever floats your proverbial boat.
  • Day 3 (Mon. Mar. 9): Cosplay Day
Today is the day to really let your cosplay flag fly! While you're welcome to cosplay any and all days of the cruise, this is your day for pulling out all the stops.
  • Day 5 (Wed. Mar. 11): Formal Night
    See notes below.
  • Day 7 (Fri. Mar. 13): Jammies Day
Everyone's running out of clean clothes anyway, so today is one big day-long celebration of the fact that nobody can make us put on “real” clothes if we don't want to!

Formal Night “Rules”:

  • Formal wear is encouraged, but not required, at dinner.
  • “Formal wear” is defined VERY flexibly. Tuxedo and cocktail dress? Fine. Sport coat and slacks? Sure. Starfleet uniform? Awesome. Full Scottish regalia? Bonnie. Your best t-shirt? Skrelnik. You get the idea.
  • Fezzes, tiaras and mustaches are encouraged—but again, not required. (The wearing of fezzes and tiaras on Formal Night has become a JoCo Cruise tradition for many.)
  • The only restriction: no full face masks (per HAL regulation).

Club SRO Reminder

There are still a limited number of spots left in Club SRO. If you're attending JoCo Cruise but aren't particularly hung up about getting guaranteed seats to the nightly main concerts, and you're interested in getting a $125 credit to your onboard stateroom account, Club SRO may be just the thing for you. Full information can be found in the Club SRO section of our FAQ.
https://jococruise.com/faq/#what-is-club-sro

If you'd like to apply for Club SRO on JoCo Cruise 2020, please fill out our online “I Want to Join Club SRO” application. Separate applications must be submitted for each individual seeking to join Club SRO.
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScG3FnJF3QmbXHcV1_dU4t3RWKa9jPKn6bfmbz3uQ3Vu3U-BA/viewform

NOTE: completing this form DOES NOT guarantee membership in Club SRO; you will be contacted by the Home Office regarding your Club SRO status, and with additional information as applicable. Again, numbers are limited; first-come, first-served.

The JoCo Cruise Tartan

Friends who sailed with us on JoCo Cruise 2019 will recall that our friends at Off Kilter Kilts introduced The Kraken, the official tartan for JoCo Cruise, for presale. In case you haven't checked their site lately, the tartan is now woven and officially available for purchase, including bolts by the yard for all your personal tartanic crafting needs…

[July 2, 2019] Berth Additions July 8th Deadline Reminder

REMINDER: Berths Additions Deadline July 8th

Per our previous email, here's one more pre-holiday-weekend reminder that if you are planning to add a berth/berths to your booking, and have not already selected and paid for those berths, please read the rest of this section and sign up for the Berth Additions Wait List by July 8th.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScI22KykLgcNCdhpDmg3kAJf3EJW1AjLVblsenmF7rmINahZg/viewform

Why should someone sign up for this list?

Anyone wishing to add berths to their booking who has not signed up on the Berth Additions Wait List by July 8th will need to pay an additional $350 fee per added berth (only assessed if and when we are able to add the requested berth(s) to your booking).

TO BE CLEAR: the above fee does not apply to wait list requests made by July 8th, nor to anyone adding “real” passenger information for an existing “TBD guest” berth (i.e., if you initially paid for a multi-passenger cabin but didn’t have all the passenger information at the time of booking).

What do we mean by “add berths to your booking?”
Here's the simplest way to know for sure whether you need to sign up for this wait list:

  • That number = number of berths in your booking
  • If you plan to add any more berths than that, you must sign up for the Berth Additions Wait List

Triple and Quad Staterooms

All quad-occupancy staterooms are currently booked, and triple-occupancy staterooms are sold out in almost all categories. If you have made a single- or double-occupancy booking but plan to upgrade to a triple or quad, please join the Berth Additions Wait List. Additional third and fourth berths will be offered to the wait list based on stateroom availability.

Single Occupancy Bookings

If you've booked a single-occupancy stateroom and plan to add a second berth, please also join the Berth Additions Wait List. Once we have clearer projections on guest count and know the number of waitlist requests, we will start processing this portion of the waitlist. (This may take some time.) We hope to be able to satisfy all single-to-double berth addition requests, but we need to know how many there will be.

I've joined this waitlist; when will I know if I get my added berth(s)?

We're working with the cruise line to determine exactly how many guests we can safely bring. We'll be doing everything we can to accommodate everyone's Berth Addition Wait list requests—we want as many guests as the Sea Cops will allow to attend JoCo Cruise 2020. That said, please note that joining the Berth Additions Wait List does not guarantee that we can accommodate your request.

So again, if you are planning to add more berths to your booking, please join the Berth Additions Wait List by July 8th. Those on this wait list will be the first to receive updates regarding berth availability. Our goal is to satisfy all requests possible.

In short: thank you! In addition to being our biggest event so far, our 2020 event has been selling at a faster pace than any previous JoCo Cruise—specifically, we are, at this point, 95% sold out! So we thank all of you for joining us for this year's adventure.

IMPORTANT: Adding Berths

Because JoCo Cruise 2020 is expected to be filled to “100% occupancy,” there will be some restrictions on adding berths (i.e., the number of people staying in your stateroom), similar to ones in place for our 2019 cruise.

If you are planning to add a berth/berths to your booking, and have not already selected and paid for those berths, please read the rest of this section and sign up for the Berth Additions Wait List by July 8th.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScI22KykLgcNCdhpDmg3kAJf3EJW1AjLVblsenmF7rmINahZg/viewform

Club SRO

Once again this year, we are offering a program called Club SRO (“Standing Room Only”), which will be available to a limited number of guests on a first-come, first-served basis. Club SRO is designed for JoCo Cruise guests who don't need or want to attend the onboard main concerts (e.g., people who don't like crowds, nerd-adjacent spouses, sixteen-hour-a-day dungeon masters, etc.).

https://jococruise.com/faq/#what-is-club-sro

People who join Club SRO will not have guaranteed seating at the evening main concerts in the ship's Mainstage Theater, and instead have the following options:

  • wait until five minutes after “morning announcements” have begun for a given main concert, at which point they may occupy any open seats, if available (JoCo Cruise staff will direct this process);
  • watch the show via live simulcast in the B.B. King's Blues Club; or
  • watch the main concert later on via the “JoCo TV” menu on your stateroom TV. (All JoCo Cruise main concerts are uploaded to the “JoCo TV menu the following day.)

Club SRO members will each receive a $125 credit to their onboard stateroom accounts.

Further information can be found in the Club SRO section of our FAQ.

If you are interested in signing up for Club SRO on JoCo Cruise 2020, please fill out our online “I Want to Join Club SRO” application.

Salutations / Pronouns

The Nieuw Amsterdam defaults to using “Mr.” or “Ms.” when addressing guests in written communication, based on the gender listed on one's travel documents. If you prefer the ship use a different salutation from the above to address you in correspondence, please fill out our Salutation Change Request form.

https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdeyzYjEblDI6W00s7ur9EqVdKJt4Mh40oxlyv_UBx0FWg9_A/viewform

Making these changes is a manual process for JoCo Cruise and the ship. PLEASE do not submit spurious, “joke” or vanity requests to change prefix.

JoCo Cruise in the New York Times

In case you didn't see us crowing about it on the various socials-media, the New York Times Travel section ran a lengthy, awesome article about JoCo Cruise 2019 last week. The article does a wonderful job capturing many of the things we love most about the cruise: everyone's enthusiasm, their kindness, their non-stop positivity, and most of all, the sense of community that pervades the event every year. If you haven't read it yet, check it out!

[March 21, 2019] Thank You! Also: Post-cruise Survey and 2020 Booking and Waitlist

Thank You!!!

Wow.

By any measure, JoCo Cruise 2019 was extraordinary. It was our first officially “sold out” full-ship charter; it had the most programming (both Official and Shadow) to date; and it had our largest Land Concert event so far. Plus, you all helped raise over $80,000 for Puerto Rico hurricane relief. And that's not even counting the Great TMBG Rainout-that-Wasn't.

We simply cannot thank you all enough for your boundless enthusiasm, your joy, your unending positivity, your kindness, and your continued support of this crazy annual adventure. You are what makes JoCo Cruise such a rewarding experience year after year, and we appreciate and value each and every one of you, individually and collectively.

Post-cruise Survey

We ask that you please take the time to fill out our post-cruise feedback survey. Besides the cruise itself, it's legitimately the most important thing we do each year. Only when we know your collective thoughts on the event can we effectively work to make it better each year and more in tune with your wants, needs and expectations.

https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/JCC2019SeaMonkeySurvey

We know that this survey isn't “quick & easy.” But every section is important, and we greatly appreciate your taking the time to fill it out.

Please be sure to share this survey URL with everyone in your booking, whether or not they have a JCC User Account. We'd like our results to be as complete as possible. Feel free to share it with friends who weren't on JoCo Cruise 2019 as well; there's sections relevant to them as well.

2020 Booking and Waitlist

If you haven't already booked your cabin for JoCo Cruise 2020, now is the time! Cabins are going fast; don't miss your chance to join us again on the high seas! Also, the $100 per person Early Booking Discount expires after April 1st.

https://booking.jococruise.com/.../book/describe-your-party/

If your desired cabin category is currently sold out, you can still join the JoCo Cruise 2020 wait list.

https://jococruise.com/2020-wait-list/

If you booked for JCC2020 while onboard JCC2019, you should have received a confirmation email on Monday. If you made an onboard booking and didn't receive a confirmation email, please respond to this email ASAP. (And don't forget, if you did book onboard, payment is due by March 26th.)

  • Bookings made before January 1, 2020 may be cancelled within 7 days of original booking with no cancellation fees.
  • Bookings made on or after January 1, 2020 may be cancelled within 24 hours of original booking with no cancellation fees.

  • Cancellation on or before April 30th, 2019: Full refund

  • Cancellation from August 1, 2019 through January 17, 2020: 50% of the total booking price
  • Cancellation on or after January 18, 2020: No refund

Wait List

If the particular cabin type(s) you're looking for are already sold out, THERE IS STILL HOPE! You can sign up on the JoCo Cruise 2020 Wait List https://jococruise.com/2020-wait-list/ if you are seeking a cabin category that is currently sold out; you may also sign up if you are already booked on JoCo Cruise 2020, but are seeking to switch to a different, currently unavailable category.

When a cabin of a previously-sold-out category becomes available, first priority will be given to those who are already booked, but are seeking to switch to that specific category. Thereafter it’ll be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance https://jococruise.com/2020faqs/#what-about-travel-insurance is not included in the JoCo Cruise 2020 cruise price, but we strongly suggest purchasing it through a third party. Each year there have been passengers who have needed to cancel for a wide variety of reasons (including adverse weather, cabinmates backing out, and unforeseen financial hardship), so we highly recommend it. For complete peace of mind, you may wish to consider a policy that allows “Cancel for Any Reason” coverage.

One travel insurance source we recommend is Yonder https://www.insureyonder.com/affiliate/JoCoCruise , which aggregates plans from many providers.

While travel insurance can be purchased just about any time, the most flexible plans generally must be purchased within 14 days of your initial booking; some trip insurance policies require purchase within one day of booking in order to be covered for pre-existing conditions.
